Myanmar, also known by its old name "Burma", is in South-East Asia. It lies on the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea coast with Bangladesh and India to the west, China to the north, and Laos and Thailand to the east. Most interesting sites are Naypyidaw (formerly Pyinmana) that is newly designated (Apr.2006). Administrative capital is in Mandalay Division. Yangon, formerly knows as Rangoon is the Commercial capital, known for its pagodas and colonial architecture. Mandalay is the former capital of the Konbaung Dynasty and is built around the Mandalay Royal Palace. Bagan is an archaeological zone near the shores of the Ayeyarwady River. Thousands of pagodas arising out of a great, dry plain, built by ancient kings of Burma, the building of Bagan led to the deforestation of central Burma and the resulting dry zone. The dry zone can be almost unbearably hot in during the hot season. Kengtung is a city inbetween Mong La (on the border with China) and Tachileik (on the border with Thailand) in the Golden Triangle. It's a well known place for its tribes, the Ann or black teeth people. Other famous places include Kyaiktiyo the gold-gilded rock, sitting atop a cliff and a major pilgrimage site and Mount Popa, an extinct volcano regarded as the Mount Olympus of Myanmar, it is an easy day trip from Bagan. Full of monkeys, a green oasis high above the hot plains of central Burma.
